Understanding aerosols is of exceptional importance for mankind. Aerosols are related to the largest uncertainty in scientific understanding of the climate and ambient particulate matter is the most harmful form of air pollution, responsible for over 4 million annual premature deaths worldwide. On the other hand, aerosol assisted processes are used in the fabrication of novel nanostructured materials, as well as in the administration of inhalable medicines.
In the Aerosol Physics Laboratory, we advance multidisciplinary science in the areas of combustion aerosols, atmospheric aerosols, nanoparticle synthesis, nanostructured coatings, and relevant measurement techniques. Our long-term vision involves the implementation of the state-of-the-art on-line mass spectrometric techniques to resolve open questions related to particle formation and chemistry in all of these areas.
Our laboratory is also responsible for aerosol physics related studies in the Master's Programme in Science and Engineering and for the education of doctoral students in the Doctoral Programme of Engineering and Natural Sciences.
