Hate speech can incite hatred against an individual or a group of people. It may also take the form of written texts, images, or drawings. Freedom of speech, on the other hand, is a right guaranteed to everyone by the Constitution of Finland and the European Convention on Human Rights. The library’s new theme collection brings together books that examine freedom of speech and hate speech from different perspectives.

The collection includes separate sections for each topic, even though they are closely connected. Hate speech is sometimes justified by appealing to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech always comes with responsibility. In Finland, it includes the prohibition of prior censorship and the principle of public access to information. Laws and practices naturally vary between countries.
