The WorkWell is a research project that investigates the impacts of multilocational digitalised work on employee well being and productivity in working life. Six pioneering companies have been selected to co-develop a sustainable and well-being-enhancing working life. Company Introduction: Basware.

A brief overview of your company, what do you do?

Basware is a Finnish AP automation service provider that offers touchless invoice processing system solutions leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning. Our solutions integrate seamlessly with various ERP systems and comply with international tax regulations. Our services are specifically designed for large, globally operating organisations, and we help them comprehensively automate the procurement-to-pay process. We are a global company with operations in multiple countries.

What are your company’s policies on remote work?

At Basware, remote work is a natural part of our daily routine. We are a global software company with teams working in different countries and time zones. We use a flexible hybrid model where employees can work both in the office and remotely. People come to the office primarily for collaboration, team days, and client meetings, and remote work is possible when the nature of the work allows it. The ground rules are agreed upon at team level so that everyone has a clear understanding of expectations and the practices suit the needs of both the individual and the team.

What are your employees particularly satisfied with right now?

Our employees especially appreciate the flexibility that allows them to balance work and their personal lives. The international work environment is also seen as an asset: we get to work with different people and cultures every day. A knowledgeable and skilled team, as well as the opportunity to develop one’s own expertise, are also frequently mentioned.

How would you describe the impact of remote work on your organisational culture?

As a global company, remote work has been part of our operations for decades, it’s built into our company’s DNA. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased the amount of remote work at the local level as well, which has brought new challenges to maintaining a sense of community.

We have focused particularly on local social events that strengthen the sense of togetherness and keep teams close-knit amid the daily grind. Whether it’s summer parties, Christmas parties, LAN events, active hobby clubs, or other shared activities, these moments are important ways for us to build community and uphold the Basware community culture. We want to evolve in a direction where hybrid work supports both individual efficiency and strong team spirit so that leadership is visible and present even in a distributed environment. Everyone has equal opportunities to be heard and advance in their careers.
