The built environment is closely linked to the wellbeing and safety of people and has a significant impact on the social, economic and environmental aspects of our society. Considering the long lifespan of buildings and public infrastructures, the decisions made about their construction and maintenance have long-term consequences.

The Faculty of Built Environment conducts high-quality scientific and applied research in the fields of architecture and civil engineering and provides higher education based on this research. Our unique environment promotes collaboration and innovations and offers opportunities to pursue new avenues of multidisciplinary research and education. Our mission is to establish a reputation as a pioneer of teaching and research in civil engineering and achieve international visibility in our areas of expertise.

We maintain close ties with the broader society and engage in extensive collaboration with industry and business. We keep a keen eye on recent developments in our fields and allocate resources accordingly. Our priority areas include, for example, sustainable build environment and the maintenance thereof, structures and their behaviour, earth, foundation and railway structures, new technologies as well as new design and modelling methods.

We provide education in civil engineering in close collaboration with Tampere University of Applied Sciences, which is part of the Tampere university community. This collaboration enables us to set up unique new multidisciplinary teaching and research teams and lead the way also in the development of teaching.
