Library
Kampusareena houses a science library, which is open for all. You can borrow printed materials, read e-resources on computers meant for visitors and study at our open premises.
Our campus and the surrounding area constitute a major technology hub. We maintain close ties with our neighbours, which include the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Hermia, and a broad range of companies. Some of these companies were born from research conducted at Tampere University of Technology, which operated from 1965 to 2018. Our strong community spirit is reflected in everything we do.
Hervanta is a hub of high-tech expertise in Tampere, as one-fifth of all the local MSc graduates with a degree in technology live in the area.
The Hervanta campus offers a wide range of services that are open to all, such as a parcel pick-up point, cafés, and restaurants. The campus is smoke-free.
History of Hervanta campus
The idea of establishing a university of technology in Tampere was brought up as early as the mid-19th century. Tampere had become a notable industrial city, and the city had a need for a technical university. President Urho Kekkonen signed the decree concerning the subsidiary operations of Helsinki University of Technology in Tampere on 13 August 1965. The university started operations a few weeks later as a subsidiary of the Helsinki University of Technology. In 1972 legislation was changed so that the Tampere subsidiary became independent from the Helsinki University of Technology.
Before the 1970s, Hervanta was mostly covered by forests and fields. Based on an initiative by the mayor at the time, construction work on a new city district close to Tampere was started. During the early years of the subsidiary, teaching took place in Tampere city centre, but as the operations started to grow, the premises became too small, and teaching was transferred to Hervanta. The first building, Konetalo, was completed in 1973.
Green roof in Kampusareena
The green roof in Kampusareena on the Hervanta campus is the largest biodiversity area of all green roofs in Finland. The roof also features insect hotels.
Awarded for promoting sustainable development in 2021, Kampusareena’s contribution to sustainable development is also reflected in the building’s success in supporting local communities. In summer, the green roof serves as a meeting place. In winter, students and children have used the roof for, for example, downhill skiing.
