President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska visited the University of Helsinki on Wednesday, 19 March, together with President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb and his spouse Suzanne Innes-Stubb. During their visit, they met with students, leaders and professors of the University of Helsinki and Tampere University.

At the meeting, Rector Sari Lindblom of the University of Helsinki and Vice President Jarmo Takala of Tampere University signed a letter of intent to join the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies, a network promoting teaching and expertise associated with Ukraine.

"This initiative, launched by Ukraine last year, brings together universities and research institutes around the world. The aim is to develop education and research about Ukrainian history, culture, economy and international relations. The universities of Tampere and Helsinki are the first to join the network," says Takala.

Mrs Olena Zelenska expressed her gratitude for the cooperation between Finnish and Ukrainian higher education institutions. She also highlighted the unique courses introduced at both Finnish universities. She especially mentioned the course on the history and identity of Ukraine by Associate Professor Rinna Kullaa of the Tampere University.

"It is crucial that the independent academic and educational community fully understands its role in fostering critical thinking and building a clear and holistic worldview," Olena Zelenska says.
