Offered through the University of the Arctic (UArctic) network, Circumpolar Studies is a multidisciplinary academic programme that explores the opportunities and challenges facing the Arctic region. The courses cover topics such as environment, cultures, societal dynamics, and historical development. All degree and exchange students at Tampere University are eligible to apply, regardless of their field of study or level of education. The application deadline for the autumn 2025 online courses is 17 August 2025. These courses provide an international learning environment and a unique opportunity to specialize in Arctic-related topics as part of your degree or exchange studies.

The autumn semester of the Circumpolar Studies runs from September to December 2025 and includes six English-language online courses organised by Canadian universities. Courses are delivered via a learning platform similar to Moodle and may include participants from various countries, in addition to Canadian students and other members of the UArctic network. Each course is worth 6 ECTS credits. Three of the courses are open to all students without prerequisites, while the other three require prior completion of the CS 100 introductory course. If you have not completed CS 100 or are not currently enrolled in it, you cannot register for the advanced courses.

**Note: Completion of CS 100 is required for CS 311, CS 321, and CS 331. If you have not completed CS 100 or are not currently taking it (during the summer), you cannot register for these courses

All courses are open to Tampere University degree and exchange students. Upon successful completion, you will receive a North American transcript, which can be used to apply for credit transfer toward your degree at Tampere University (degree students). Transcripts are typically issued 6–12 weeks after the course ends, so we advise not to rely on these courses for graduation timing (degree students). Circumpolar Studies credits can also be included in your internationalisation module (degree students).

Exchange students will receive separate instructions on how to include these credits to your final transcript from Tampere University.

To apply, submit the completed and signed application form (as a PDF file) by email to Igor Tanskanen, the north2north programme coordinator. Applications that are unsigned or submitted late will not be considered. Course places are limited. Tampere University will nominate candidates and forward applications, after which the final selection is made by the course provider. For questions about the courses, contact: circumpolarstudies [at] trentu.ca (circumpolarstudies[at]trentu[dot]ca).

Interested in exploring Arctic opportunities and challenges further? You still have time to apply for exchange studies in North America for spring semester 2026. All credits earned abroad can be included in your internationalisation module

Circumpolar Studies also offers a pathway to Arctic specialisation through student exchange. Successfully completed Arctic-themed courses earn extra points in the north2north exchange selection process. A supplementary application round for spring 2026 North American destinations will be held in September. Available destinations and details can be found in the north2north programme description. Courses completed during exchange can also be included in your internationalisation module.
