The needs assessment for the major renovation of the Päätalo building at the city centre campus has been launched as part of the university’s Facilities Programme. During 2025, the assessment will identify the extent of renovation required and define additional development objectives for Päätalo.

The assessment will examine the need for a major renovation of the entire building, along with the development and modification needs of the existing spaces. It will also explore potential synergies in specialised facilities between the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences and the Faculty of Education and Culture.

The goal of the Päätalo project is to create multifunctional, community-oriented spaces that meet both current and future needs while respecting the building’s history. Designed by architect Toivo Korhonen, Päätalo was completed in 1960. The renovation aims to restore the spirit of the original design, with any necessary changes made with care and consideration.

"Päätalo has a long-standing tradition, and its development and upkeep are important to the university. This assessment will clarify the scope of the renovation needed and define the university’s functional goals for Päätalo moving forward. Even today, Päätalo hosts many spaces, events, and activities that bring the university community together – and these kinds of spaces will remain essential in the future", says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen.

The architecture office Helamaa & Heiskanen has been selected to carry out the needs assessment. The project has been commissioned and will be implemented in collaboration with the property owner, University Properties of Finland Ltd (SYK).

"We recognise that the development of Päätalo must consider the building’s character and cultural values, honouring its historical significance. Co-development with the university community is also a vital part of the project to ensure that users can participate in shaping the future of Päätalo", says SYK CEO Sanna Sianoja.

The needs assessment phase will be completed by the end of 2025. A decision on the continuation of the Päätalo project will be made after the assessment is complete.
