ARISE Project Welcomes Ukrainian Students and Staff for the Training Week at Tampere University

Launched on August 1, 2024, the ARISE project is coordinated by the Higher Education Group (HEG) of the Tampere University's Faculty of Management and Business. The project aims to address the critical need for developing and preserving human capital in Ukraine by providing targeted crisis policy and management training for young professionals in higher education studies. This week's training session exemplifies the project's commitment to strengthening academic cooperation between Ukraine and Finland while developing capacities of Ukrainian partner institutions.
The course "Higher Education Policy and Management in Emergencies" has been collaboratively developed by the ARISE project partner institutions, - Tampere University's (TAU) Higher Education Group, the Institute of Higher Education of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine (IHED), and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (TSNUK). This collaboration highlights the project's focus on building resilient and innovative higher education systems through international partnership. The course is taught by Professor Jussi Kivistö and Doctoral Researcher Kateryna Suprun (TAU), together with Senior Researcher Olena Orzhel (IHED) and Associate Professor Svitlana Paschenko (TSNUK). The technical and logistical support for both on-site and online students is provided by Researcher Karol Leja (TAU) and Associate Professor Alla Moskalenko (TSNUK).
The course is delivered in a hybrid format – a key feature of the ARISE project's implementation strategy – allowing both on-site participation at the Tampere University and remote attendance for students joining from Ukraine, thus ensuring wider outreach within the Ukrainian higher education community. Beyond classroom lectures, the ARISE training programme includes several extracurricular events designed to deepen participants' understanding of the Finnish higher education system, policies and practices. A highlight of these activities was a visit to the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, where Educational Advisors from the Department of Higher Education and Science Policy, Maija Innola and Kaisu-Maria Piiroinen, delivered an informative presentation on higher education in Finland and the Ministry's support for Ukraine during the ongoing crisis.
This training week represents just one component of the broader ARISE initiative, which will continue over a two-year period. The project provides a unique opportunity to share knowledge and experiences on higher education policy and management in emergencies, while strengthening resilience and crisis management skills of participants. Through these efforts, ARISE contributes to preparing a new generation of higher education leaders for the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine's higher education sector, while simultaneously deepening the Finnish higher education community's knowledge for participation in rebuilding projects in Ukraine.
The ARISE project exemplifies Finland's commitment to supporting higher education in Ukraine during challenging times and demonstrates how international academic cooperation can play a vital role in preserving and developing human capital in crisis situations.
