The new professorship combining artificial intelligence and media at Tampere University attracted a record number of applicants

The position is a donated professorship aimed at strengthening research on artificial intelligence and media in Finland. The role is located within the Unit of Communication Sciences in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC), and candidates are expected to demonstrate research expertise, for example, in the impacts of generative AI, large language models, and AI-based systems on journalism, media culture, and communication processes.
According to Marko Ala-Fossi, Head of the Unit of Communication Sciences, international interest in this unique position was strong.
– The large number of applicants shows that the position has generated broad international interest and motivated candidates to apply. One could say that the first goal of the recruitment process has thus been achieved.
The professorship is part of a nationally significant investment in research in the field. The Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, the Media Industry Research Foundation of Finland, and the C. V. Åkerlund Media Foundation have donated funds for the position to strengthen AI expertise in the Finnish media society.
