A few hundred new international degree students will enrol at Tampere University in the autumn of 2025. Starting on 18 August, the University’s Welcome Week is designed to help international students settle into life in Finland and make a successful start to their studies.

Welcome Week features a range of events, activities and information sessions that support students in their transition into their new campus environment and the university community. During the week, international students are introduced to the University’s academic advising and support services, the student union TREY and other key contacts.

Welcome Week helps get started with studies

The aim of Welcome Week is not only to assist students with the practical aspects of starting their studies but also to help them find their place within the community. Education and Learning Specialist Tiina Nilsson hopes that students gain a positive first impression of Tampere University during Welcome Week.

“Welcome Week offers students a valuable first opportunity to make new friends, build networks, receive peer support and develop a sense of belonging within the university community. A positive start helps students feel more at ease and increases their sense of safety and engagement. This, in turn, supports their integration into university life and creates a positive cycle of participation, inclusion and agency. First impressions matter, they can set the tone for the whole university experience and even play a role in whether the students choose to stay in Finland after completing their studies,” Nilsson says.

New students are not left to manage on their own after Welcome Week. Nilsson emphasises that students are not expected to know everything immediately, even though they receive a wealth of information during the week. Support is consistently offered and remains readily available to students throughout their studies.

"Everyone starts out a bit on their own, so reaching out and connecting with fellow students from the beginning is definitely the best way to get going,” says education and learning specialist Tiina Nilsson.

“Finnish students are just as uncertain when they first enrol at the University. I encourage all new students to join the activities that are going on as they are a great way to create memorable experiences, make new friends and maybe even discover new hobbies or interests," Nilsson concludes.

Tutors offer peer support for new students

In addition to university staff, student tutors offer help and support during the beginning of studies. Approximately 270 students have volunteered to work as tutors for international and exchange students this fall.

Tutoring is organized by Student Union of Tampere University TREY. Teemu Juutilainen, TREY’s specialist in tutoring says that tutors are a valuable asset in helping new students feel welcome in the university community.

“Welcome Week is very important for new students, as they will learn a lot about the studies, community and Finland in general. But it’s okay, if you don’t know everything after the first week. Going forward, I encourage you to keep an open mind and maybe try new things with your tutors. They offer valuable peer support in these times,” Juutilainen says.
