At Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK), research, development and innovation (RDI) activities go hand in hand with high-quality education. In the future, RDI activities will focus on five strategic areas of strength. They help us respond to the key challenges of our time. At the beginning of 2026, seven research groups started their operations, and their themes are linked to TAMK's areas of strength. Research groups bring opportunities for a researcher's career path.

TAMK is determined to develop its applied science research activities and introduce a new kind of research career model. The model offers a competitive career path for those who are enthusiastic about applied research.

The competence units of our university of applied sciences are now looking for researchers to join research groups in roles according to the researcher's career path according to their needs. The duties of a researcher and a senior researcher are fixed-term employment relationships of four years, during which it is possible to advance to the next stage of the researcher's career path and all the way to the principal investigator's employment relationship valid until further notice. Initially, there are 9 open positions available for application in several themes. New career model provides an opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment.

Excellence in new research groups

The seven new research groups bring together experts from TAMK's five different competence units. In the future, more new research groups will be established as areas of expertise with a sufficiently strong RDI profile are identified.

"The establishment of research groups is part of our new strategy. The groups have been selected based on the proposals of our faculties, and they play an important role in strengthening their own area of expertise and the RDI activities of our entire university,” says TAMK's President, Professor Mika Hannula.

Research groups and their leaders:

  • Applied CleanTech (ACT): Tero Joronen, Principal Researcher, DSc (Tech.)
  • Bio‑based Colorants and Inks (Biocolores): Kai Lankinen, Principal Researcher, DSc (Tech.)
  • Family Growth and Wellbeing (GrowWell): Pia Keiski, Principal Researcher, DHSc
  • Predictive, Preventive, Personalised and Participatory Health (PRECISE): Arja Halkoaho, Professor of Practice, DHSc
  • Sustainable Futures through Human Interaction and Transformative Learning across Societal Transitions (SHIFT): Hanna Davis, Principal Researcher, PhD
  • TAMK Advanced Manufacturing Group (TAMG): Katri Salminen, Principal Researcher, DSc (Tech.)
  • Transformative Value Creation in Renewing Economy (TraCE): Maria Åkerman, Principal Researcher, DSc (Admin.)

Although the groups bring together experts from the same theme or area of expertise, the approach in many groups is multidisciplinary. The research groups also offer the staff better opportunities to develop their own skills and become top experts in their field.

Strategic areas of strength guiding operations

The strategic strengths of Tampere University of Applied Sciences' RDI activities combine multidisciplinary expertise, applied research and close partnership. Defining them is also part of our organization’s new strategy and the profiling of our RDI expertise. Our goal is to strengthen the competitiveness of companies and public entities, promote well-being and develop sustainable solutions for future needs.
