The global Sustainable Development Goals SDG Flag Day is celebrated on Thursday 25 September 2025. The colourful SDG flag has been hoisted on the Hervanta and city centre campuses of Tampere University. Sustainability and responsibility play a key role in the values and strategic goals of our University. Information on the results achieved so far has been compiled in the University's first sustainability and responsibility report.
The sustainability and responsibility report, which was completed in June, covers the year 2024. The report has been prepared to complement the annual report, to highlight the impact of the university's research, education, and collaboration in promoting sustainability, and to detail our efforts to reduce our environmental and social footprint.
Successes highlighted in the report:
- The total carbon footprint of Tampere University decreased significantly compared to 2023. This was particularly due to the significant reduction in the carbon footprint of investments. The carbon footprint of service purchases and travel had also decreased slightly from 2023. Efforts have been made to reduce the carbon footprint of investments, and the University is committed to the principles of responsible investment.
- Tampere University is the only Finnish university and, so far, also the only educational organisation that has published its procurement data. The material has been public since 2022 and is available on the Explore public spending website. We make purchases with public funds, and the publication of procurement data increases the transparency of the use of money and reflects good governance.
Areas for development highlighted in the report:
- We are developing the sustainability and responsibility criteria for our procurements in order to reduce the carbon footprint caused by procurement. We must also set a clear reduction target for procurements.
- We will also calculate our nature footprint for 2025.
- We will pay attention to the promotion of equality and non-discrimination work, accessibility and cultural sustainability as part of sustainability work, both in terms of statutory duties and as part of national cooperation between universities.
