UArctic and Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) are thrilled to offer an opportunity for students from UArctic member institutions to join the 11th Korea Arctic Academy in Busan, South Korea. This course, held from 7 July to 12 July 2025, brings together students from UArctic and Korean universities for an immersive experience. Dive deep into Arctic issues through engaging lectures led by international and Korean experts from renowned Arctic-related organisations and research institutions. This is your chance to gain invaluable insights and network with leading professionals in the field. Selected students will receive a travel grant to South Korea, along with free accommodation and meals throughout the course. The Korea Arctic Academy, hosted by the Korean Ministry of Oceans & Fisheries and co-organized by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and the University of the Arctic (UArctic), invites students to participate in an enriching exchange programme / course in South Korea. This initiative aims to foster a shared Arctic vision by spreading knowledge on sustainable Arctic development, ocean management, and the understanding of Arctic indigenous peoples.

About the course in South Korea (7 - 12 July 2025)

The course features lectures n Arctic issues, delivered by international and Korean experts from Arctic-related organisations and research institutions in Korea.

  • Price: FREE for students of Tampere University, including flight tickets to South Korea, accommodation in South Korea and all meals included in the course
  • Language: English
  • Level: Introductory
  • Dates: 7 - 12 July 2025
  • Organisers: Korea Maritime Institute and UArctic
  • Course content: Topics include Arctic Policy, Sustainable Arctic, Arctic Science, Arctic Governance, Society Arctic, Arctic Science
  • Additionally: Participants will also engage in cultural exchange activities, including traditional Korean experiences and collaborative workshops, as well as field visits to leading research institutions and industrial sites related to Arctic affairs
  • Credits: Previously 2 ECTS were given, but no information is available regarding the 2025 course, please ask the organiser for more details

Eligibility criteria

  • Accepted study levels: bachelor's, master's or doctoral (PhD) level students of Tampere University, with at least two years of bachelor's studies completed
  • Open to students of all academic backgrounds
  • Must be motivated to actively participate and enhance understanding of the Arctic and Korea
  • Sufficient knowledge of English, both oral and written

UArctic and KMI will make the final selection of admitted students on 30 April 2025, who will be informed immediately afterwards.
