Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation awards funding to researchers at Tampere University

The Future Makers programme supports ambitious research projects aimed at fostering innovation and developing sustainable solutions for the future. This year, the Foundation allocated a total of €3.5 million in research funding – an increase of more than half a million compared to last year.
Two researchers at Tampere University have secured funding under the Future Makers call: Assistant Professor Satu Häkkinen from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and University Instructor Emre Kapucu from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology.
Häkkinen’s project seeks to create an emissions-free method for recycling plastic waste into high-value products, biodegradable polymers and green hydrogen. Her research addresses the global plastic waste challenge and promotes the transition towards a circular economy and a green hydrogen economy in Finland. The project, which also involves Assistant Professor Daniel Martin Yerga from Aalto University, received a grant of €500,000.
Kapucu’s project will develop an AI-powered decision-making platform based on organ-on-chip technology to improve drug therapy for Parkinson’s disease. This technology will enhance the prediction and treatment of Parkinson’s disease and has potential applications for other neurological conditions as well. It will also reduce healthcare costs. This project was awarded a grant of €265,000.
The Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation promotes renewal and future competitiveness within the technology industries in Finland. The Foundation sponsors ambitious projects to develop education, research and innovations in technology.
