Times Higher Education (THE) has published discipline-specific university rankings. After ranking universities’ overall performance globally, the magazine publishes field-specific comparisons, the first of which were Life Sciences, Clinical and Health Sciences, Psychology and Physical Sciences.

Tampere University featured in three discipline-specific rankings. The best in its own list was psychology whose placement slightly rose from last years. It is now ranked among the 200 best in the world (places 176–200).

Professor Jari Hietanen is delighted with the result and says that the psychology staff has successfully focused its research.

“Together, our researchers have chosen to focus research on important, globally interesting and well-researched topics,” Hietanen says.

Tampere University has been strong in the number of research citations, which reflects the attention other researchers pay to work done by scholars at Tampere University.

“In the selected priority areas, our research has produced a relatively high number of results that the scientific community finds interesting and significant. This means that the research of psychology at Tampere University has a high impact,” Hietanen mentions.

In Clinical and Health Sciences Tampere University was ranked among the 300 best universities in the world. In Life Sciences, the University was placed among the top 400. The top 100 in their field are given an exact ranking while those that come next are placed in groups.

Published in early September, THE’s world ranking of universities placed Tampere University in the category of 250–300, which is a slight improvement from 2020.

THE uses five metrics to rank universities, broken down into more detailed indicators. The most important of these are teaching, research, and the number of research citations.
