Goëry Genty, Professor in Ultrafast Photonics at Tampere University and Director of the Finnish Flagship for Photonics Research and Innovation (PREIN), has been named to the Photonics100 list, which celebrates the top global innovators advancing the field of photonics.

The annual Photonics100 recognizes the top 100 innovators who are shaping the global photonics landscape. Honorees are selected for their pioneering work in academia, industry and entrepreneurship, with applications ranging from quantum technology and biomedicine to lasers and optical communications.

A pioneer in his field, Goëry Genty has advanced several concepts ranging from the generation of broadband supercontinuum light and the characterization in real-time of ultrashort pulses nonlinear dynamics to the application of machine learning for smart light sources and the use of optical fibers for computing. His latest work develops broadband structured light sources based on nonlinear effects in multimode optical fibers, covering wavelengths from the UV to the mid-IR. By using tailored fiber designs and controlling intermodal nonlinearities, the research group of Prof. Genty generates high-brightness supercontinuum beams with spatial structure – including broadband Bessel beams and beams carrying orbital angular momentum. Unlike single-mode systems, multimode fibers offer higher energy handling and access to rich spatial-spectral dynamics. In parallel, Prof Genty is exploring how nonlinear multimode interactions can be used for analogue optical computing.

As the director of the National Innovative Doctoral Education Ecosystem for Photonics (I-DEEP) and the head of the International Master programme in Photonics Technologies at Tampere University, Prof. Genty is also known for his dedication to education, supervision of PhD students and postdocs, as well as a mentor for junior professors.
