The demand for textile specialists able to solve sustainability challenges is constantly increasing and they will play a key role in the global business.
This Bachelor's degree in Textile and Material Engineering focuses on the different textile manufacturing processes, ecological and biobased textile fibers. The degree programme will give you the ability to work as a professional in purchasing, in marketing and in managing of development and production in textile industry.
Your studies will progress from basics knowledge of materials to value chains of global textile industry as well as sustainability challenges of global business.
After graduation, you will have several career options as textile and material specialist in industry, in business or in public organizations. To give a few examples, you could start your career as sales engineer, design engineer or production engineer and proceed in various managerial positions.

Textile engineering is making a comeback at TAMK. After seven years on hiatus, the new developing curriculum aims to face the challenges of the future, and new sustainability goals have been incorporated to train a totally new type of specialist for the needs of the future.

This degree programme is designed to educate internationally oriented material and textile engineers. Textiles give a possibility to utilize wood based materials and recycled fibres as well as for development of innovative products and service concepts. This development requires new professionals.
After graduating as a Bachelor of Engineering you will:
- Have a strong knowledge about the materials and structures of different textiles including ecological textile fibers
- Have understanding about testing and analyzing of different textile materials
- Be able to manage production and quality assurance of different textile manufacturing processes

The official language of the degree programme is English, but good communication skills in Finnish are essential if you are planning to stay and work in Finland. This is true for both Finns and non-Finns. Finnish language studies at different levels are offered in the curriculum of the degree programme and you are encouraged to take also other Finnish courses during your studies.
The studies focus on material and textile knowledge and engineering tools integrating sustainable design with new products and services.
Innovative learning concepts like TAMK’s TalentFactory provides students company contacts and gives an overview to textile industry and businesses.
Various laboratory work and other practical assignments give an opportunity for “hands on” learning.
A part of the studies is organized in close collaboration with bioproduct engineering, environmental engineering and business education. Working in multidisciplinary student groups give competences needed in working life.

The degree carries a tuition fee of EUR 9 800 / academic year for non-EU/EEA students. Applicants must submit relevant documentation together with their application. Scholarships
50% Early Bird -scholarship waiver for the first year, if acceptance of offered study place and 50% payment of first year tuition fee is done within 7 days of receiving a Conditional Offer Letter.
Academic Award -scholarship waivers of 25% and 50% in the following years based on credits gained and Finnish language skills test results.
At the time of graduation, students may be eligible for significant Academic Excellence scholarships. These scholarships are governed by the TAMK's R&D Fund. They can be based on final thesis quality, excellence in project work, exceptional practical training success or other grounds set by the Fund.

The aim of the Bachelor's thesis (15 credits) is to develop and demonstrate your ability to apply your knowledge and expertise to a task pertaining to your professional studies. The task undertaken has to conform to the needs of working life, and develop professional practices, knowledge and skills.
The second part of your practical training period is a good time to look for a thesis project. It is recommended that the project should address a challenge facing the organisation where you do the practical training. There are also other alternatives; the thesis can be done as part of TAMK's research, development and innovation operations, or as a project for an internal or external customer.
During your studies you can work in various, multidisciplinary and international projects and projects in the circular and bioeconomy. They offer you the opportunity to work in a working life network and help you find the topic of your thesis and the transition to working life after graduation.
As a material and textile engineer, you work in production positions, various development positions, or technical purchasing and sales and customer service positions in the textile related industry. Industrial subcontractors, machinery and equipment suppliers, and raw material suppliers also offer interesting and international assignments to engineers in this training.
Typical professional titles include operations engineer, production engineer, departmental engineer, sales engineer, customer service engineer, project engineer, research and development engineer, quality engineer, shift manager, production designer, and laboratory manager.
The degree is conducted in English. You can complete part of your degree abroad at our partner universities, which number more than 300 in more than 50 countries. You can also get an internship from any country. At TAMK, the international atmosphere is guaranteed by hundreds of foreign degree and exchange students from all over the world. Other ways to acquire language and cultural skills include language studies, tutoring foreign students, family activities with friends, English and international projects.
As a TAMK degree student, you also have the opportunity to choose studies from the offer of the University of Tampere in accordance with your personal study plan. Through this cross-study, you can participate in university courses, joint projects and thus build your individual skills. You can also complete your studies at other polytechnics through the national study offer.
The Tampere university community offers Master's degrees in all fields of education of our university community. Once you graduate from this degree programme, you qualify to continue towards a Master's degree in either a traditional research university or a university of applies sciences. Please note that Master's degrees in universities of applied sciences are mid-career Master's and require a minimum of 24 months of work experience in the field after completing the degree.

Language skill requirements
Sufficient English language skills are also required for degree programmes conducted in English. English language skills will be evaluated as part of the admission process.

Paper-based selection by SAT score
TAMK requires you to take the SAT, which includes a Reading test, a Writing and Language test and a Math test. Essay is not required. Please note that SAT Subject Tests are not accepted. Only new SAT scores taken after 1 March 2016 are accepted.
An applicant applying with SAT scores must have both of the following SAT test sections with the following minimum points completed:
- Evidence-Based Reading and Writing minimum 550 points
- Reading Test
- Writing and Language Test
- Mathematics minimum 550 points
The lowest accepted SAT score total is 1100 points. Students are selected in order of points.
Applicants must submit the SAT score by 4 April 2022. Therefore, the SAT should be taken no later than on the March 2022 test date. Registration deadlines can be found from SAT website. The SAT score must arrive to TAMK Admissions Office directly from the College Board. Fill in the institution code 6960 when registering for SAT test. International UAS Exam
The entrance examination assesses the applicants’ abilities to study in universities of applied sciences. The entrance examination does not contain any pre-reading materials or pre-tasks.

Selection between applicants with equal points
If two or more applicants earn the same admission points, the application system will automatically draw the order.
An online entrance examination, the International UAS Exam consists of two phases:
- First phase - written exam on 9 February 2022
- Second phase - group interview on 2 - 16 March 2022. The group interview includes a group discussion and a section of producing English language in writing.
The entrance examination assesses the applicants’ abilities to study in universities of applied sciences. The entrance examination does not contain any pre-reading materials or pre-tasks.

First phase – written exam
All applicants are invited to the first phase. The contents and duration of the first phase are determined by the study programmes the applicant has applied for. The applicant performs all sections of the entrance examination of the selected study programmes during a single session. The written exam of the first phase contains common tasks for all applicants and specific tasks of individual study programmes.
Common tasks for all study fields:
- Reasoning skills
- Language of tuition (English)
In addition to common sections of all study fields, the entrance examination contains the following study field specific sections:
- Mathematical skills (all fields except Arts and Humanities, Education)
- Advanced mathematical skills (all technical fields)
- Ethical skills (in Social Services, Health Care, Sports, Beauty Care and Arts and Humanities, Education
- Finnish language skills (in some Social Services and Health Care programmes, level B1)
In the Advanced mathematical skills section, the applicant may use the function calculator of the entrance examination system.
Each section has a minimum accepted score that the applicant has to achieve in order to have the written exam approved.
Signing in to the entrance exam is only possible via personal link.
Approximately one week before the entrance exam, you receive a personal link in the email address you have given in your Studyinfo application. The link is also available at My Studyinfo in your own application. The personal link will be sent to all applicants that have applied for a study programme using the International UAS Exam.
Second phase – group interview (oral exam)
All eligible applicants who have passed the written exam will be invited to the second phase. The second phase is common to all study fields and the applicant participates in only one group interview. The applicants are invited to the interview groups by study fields. The applicant will be invited to the interview group of the study programme which is highest on his or her list of preferences where the written exam is passed.
The group interview includes a group discussion and a section of producing English language in writing.
The final student selection is based on the total number of points of the written exam (60%) and the group interview (40%).
Entrance exam cooperation
TAMK participates in national entrance examination cooperation.
Universities of applied sciences in Finland organise International UAS exam in cooperation. Degree programmes belonging to the same entrance exam group accept entrance exams completed in other participating UAS.
Individual arrangements for entrance examinations are practical arrangements made by TAMK to facilitate application in case of special needs. You can apply for the right to individual arrangements for entrance examinations / online interviews in using an online application (below). The deadline for applying for individual arrangements is 26 January 2022.
You need to describe your special needs and the grounds for individual arrangements in the application. You should enclose copies of the certificates to which they appeal. The certificates may not date back for more than 5 years. More detailed instructions on the attachments are provided on the online application. All documents supporting the applications are confidential and approved methods of administration are applied when processing these documents.
If you do not deliver the application in time, TAMK has no obligation to make any individual arrangements. If the need for individual arrangements arises or is discovered between the end of the application period and the online interview/entrance exam, you must submit the individual arrangement application without a delay to TAMK Admissions Office.
You will receive a notification (not a decision) concerning the individual arrangements before the entrance examination/online interview.
The individual arrangement decision only applies to one application round.

Eligibility documents
A degree completed outside of Finland
You have to upload the required certificate copies on your application form by 26 January 2022 at 3 pm (Finnish time) at the latest. If your original degree certificate is in a language other than Finnish, Swedish or English, you also have to upload a copy of its authorised translation. The authorised translation has to be in Finnish, Swedish or English and it has to include the translator’s signature and stamp.
International matriculation examination (IB, EB, RP/DIA)
You have to upload the diploma and the official translation (RP/DIA) copies on your application form by 26 January 2022 at 3 pm (Finnish time) at the latest.
Finnish matriculation examination prior to 1990
You have to upload the matriculation examination certificate on your application form by 26 January 2022 at 3 pm (Finnish time) at the latest.
Graduates of spring 2022
You have to upload a stamped and signed document from your school stating that you are graduating by the end of the academic year on your application form by 26 January 2022 at 3 pm (Finnish time) at the latest. If you are applying with IB/EB/DIA diploma and graduating during the academic year 2021-2022, submit a Predicted Grades or equivalent by 6 April 2022 at 3 pm Finnish time at the latest to the highest study option's UAS' Admissions Office. If your original document is in a language other than Finnish, Swedish or English, you also have to send a copy of its certified translation. The translation has to be in Finnish, Swedish or English and it has to include the translator’s signature and stamp.
If you are applying with other than above-mentioned degree, you don’t have to send certificate copies during the application period.
The certificate copies are checked from those who are accepted as students and the final certificate copies (Transcript of Grades for those completing IB diploma) have to be sent by 15 July 2022.
Document proving identity and exemption of tuition fee
All applicants must upload a copy of an ID-document on their application form. The document is used to prove applicants identity during different stages of the admissions process (i.e. the online interview), and to establish their citizenship and/or residence status.
Students who are not citizens of countries of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, or are not holders of certain residence status in Finland are subjec to tuition fees.
All submitted documents must include a photograph and the applicant must be identifiable from the photograph. The copy must be fully legible.
Submit one of the following documents:
- Passport ID page or ID card of EU/EEA/Switzerland which states citizenship
- Passport ID page (all other citizenships)
- Finnish driving license (only Finnish citizens)
- EU Blue Card
- EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland
- Type A permit (continuous residence permit in Finland)
- Type P permit (permanent residence permit in Finland)
- Type P-EU permit (EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence in Finland)
You must upload the copy/copies on your application form by 26 January 2022 at 3 pm (Finnish time).
SAT score report
If you are applying with the SAT score, your SAT score must be submitted to TAMK Admissions Office by 4 April 2022. Therefore the SAT should be taken no later than on the March 2022 test date.
The SAT score must be sent to TAMK UAS Admissions Office directly from the College Board. Please fill in the institution code 6960 when you register for the SAT.

Admitted applicant: A copy of the final secondary school certificate or equivalent
All admitted applicants (with Finnish or non-Finnish degree) have to upload their final certificate copies on the application form by 15 July 2022 at 3 pm Finnish time.
This does not apply for academic year 2021-2022 graduates, whose final diploma cannot be submitted by the deadline. These applicants may request another deadline. However, academic year 2021-2022 graduates have to submit a document from their educational institution/instant stating that the applicant has graduated/passed the final exams by 15 July 2022 at 3 pm Finnish time. Student selection is conditional until TAMK has checked the admitted students’ original final school certificates. TAMK may withdraw the admission if you do not deliver the certificates by the deadline or if you have given false information.
If your original degree certificate is in a language other than Finnish, Swedish or English, you have to submit a copy of its certified translation. The translation has to be in Finnish, Swedish or English and it has to include the translator’s signature and stamp.
Applicants with a refugee status
If you are a refugee, have a status comparable to a refugee or are an asylum seeker, and cannot thus verify your previous degree with relevant documentation, please be in contact to TAMK's admissions office before applying (admissions.tamk[at]tuni.fi).
You must have a decision by the authorities concerning your status (decision on asylum or residence permit on the basis of protection). A copy of the relevant decision must be submitted to TAMK's Admissions Office by 26 March 2022 by mail. If you have not yet been granted a decision, you may verify your status by presenting an identity card with their photograph granted by Migri and a fee-based (approximately €20) pending application by Migri that states that you are permitted to legally reside in Finland during the time when your case is being processed, i.e. until a lawful decision has been made on the case.
Results
Results for the August 2022 intake will be published in March 2022 at the earliest and on June 2022 at the latest.
All applicants:
- See their results by logging into Studyinfo.fi portal
- Receive an e-mail/a letter stating their result and points
- Admitted applicants receive also a notice of admittance by e-mail
Confirm the offered study place in time
Admitted applicants must confirm their study place by 15 July 2022 at 3 pm (Finnish time) by logging into Studyinfo.fi portal. If the confirmation has not been done by the deadline, the applicant will lose the offered study place.
Non-EU/EEA students: To qualify for the Early Bird -scholarship you must accept the offered study place within 7 days!
Confirmation of the study place is binding and cannot be altered or cancelled.
If you are admitted later from the waiting list, you have 7 days to confirm your study place. Please read your e-mail regularly in order to receive the possible admittance e-mail in time. The final day of admittance of new students is 2 August 2022.
Original certificates
The original certificates will be checked at the beginning of the studies. Student admission is conditional until TAMK has checked the admitted students' original school certificates at the beginning of the studies.
TAMK may withdraw the admission if you do not deliver the original certificates by the set date or if you have given false information.
One study place
You can only accept one study place among Bachelor's/Master's degrees in Finland starting during the same academic semester (1 Aug-31 Dec/1 Jan-31 Jul). Even if you register as absent or quit your studies, you cannot accept another study place during the same academic semester.
Enroll for studies
When accepting the study place, you also have to register as present or absent for your studies at TAMK on the Studyinfo.fi portal.
According to Finnish legislation, first-year student may register as absent for the first academic year for the following reasons only:
- Finnish military service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women's Voluntary Military Service (194/1995);
- maternity, paternity or parental leave;
- the student cannot begin studies due to being incapacitated by personal illness or injury.
If you register as absent, you must prove the legal grounds for your absence. TAMK requires you to present these documents by 15 July 2022 at 3 pm Finnish time. Documents must be delivered to TAMK Admissions Office.
If you register as absent in your first academic year, but fail to deliver sufficient clarification regarding the grounds for your absence within the deadline, you will lose your right to study.
Appeals
If you believe that there has been a mistake in the student selection or the set admission criteria have not been applied correctly, you can submit a written request for rectification of the student selection decision addressed to TAMK Board of Examiners within 14 days after the student selection results have been published.
Always check the admission criteria of the programme first and contact TAMK Admissions Office before writing the request. If the issue cannot be solved by the admissions officials, you are advised to submit a written request for rectification.
Form and content of request for an administrative review:
The document requesting an administrative review shall indicate the particular decision for which the review is requested, the amendment that is being sought in the review requested and the grounds for requesting the review. (Administrative Procedure Act, Section 49d)
