High-entropy carbides by tailored carbothermic reduction of metal oxides (HECTOR)

High entropy carbides (HECs) are multi-metal carbides with typically five or more metal atoms in near-equal concentrations. They represent a novel class of ceramic materials with a high degree of structural disorder, hence unique combination of properties. Due to sensitivity to compositional variation in manufacturing, HECs are not yet industrially utilized. In HERBIE research project, we developed a way to control the compositional variation during carbo-thermal reduction of metal oxides. These results will be utilized and further developed in HECTOR proof-of-concept project for the benefit of industrial applications jointly defined with industry stakeholders. The HECs will be manufactured using sustainable and cheap raw materials, employing the practices and approach developed in HERBIE, and demonstrated for performance under conditions relevant to the industrial applications. The activities are performed jointly by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd and Tampere University.
