AS-Connection: Bodily synchrony, socioemotional communication and a sense of connection in children on the autism spectrum

Many children on autism spectrum face significant challenges in peer-relationships. Experiences of loneliness can have a broad impact on their development and well-being. In this Tampere University’s research project, we are investigating factors related to how school-aged children with or without autism, establish social connections.

We are examining social connections at the level of psychophysiological and behavioral synchrony, verbal and non-verbal interaction, and the children's own experiences. We are studying how connections are formed between another child and an interventionist in a social skill intervention setting. The aim of the project is to increase understanding of how we can best support children in creating positive social relationships.
