University of Turku will start to coordinate University Consortium of Pori
The University of Turku and Tampere University have operations at the University Consortium of Pori. The coordination responsibility of the University Consortium of Pori transfers to the University of Turku on 1 January 2025, and, in addition to the coordination of the operations, the University will organise the administrative and support services for the University Consortium.
The change concerns five employees who will transfer from Tampere University to the University of Turku as so-called old employees. The transfer does not affect their terms of employment or their place of work.
The boards of both universities have proposed the transfer of the coordination responsibility to the Ministry of Education and Culture. The basis for the proposal is that the University of Turku is the largest organisation at the University Consortium by the number of students and degrees. Tampere University has been coordinating two university consortia, one at Seinäjoki and one at Pori. The University of Turku does not have the coordination responsibility for any consortia.
“According to its Strategy, the University of Turku collaborates closely with the Finnish society and participates actively in the development of its region. We have several very important partners in the Satakunta region and we are happy to take responsibility for the coordination of the University Consortium of Pori,” says Vice Rector responsible for partnerships and strategic engagement Mika Hannula from the University of Turku.
“Tampere University has operated in Satakunta for decades and the university's faculties have extensive research and education activities in Pori. In accordance with its Strategy, Tampere University will be strong partner and an active societal influencer in the Satakunta region also in the future. This work is carried out in communication with the actors in the region and in good co-operation with the University of Turku, under the framework of the University Consortium,” says Provost Jarmo Takala from Tampere University.
“The current activities of the University of Turku at the University Consortium of Pori are extensive. In addition, the University of Turku has recently been actively involved in developing technology education at the University Consortium of Pori together with Tampere University and in creating business partnerships in Satakunta. Although the transfer of the coordination responsibility will not have a direct impact on the University Consortium's operations, research or education, at best it can open up new opportunities for using the expertise of the University of Turku in the Satakunta region. Tampere University, and before that the Tampere University of Technology, has been responsible for the coordination of the University Consortium of Pori since the beginning and has at the same time developed its education and research activities in Pori. Committed collaboration with Tampere University will continue also after the coordination responsibility transfers to Turku,” says Director of the University Consortium Katariina Yrjönkoski.
Turku School of Economics and the Degree Programme in Digital Culture, Landscape and Cultural Heritage of the Faculty of Humanities offer education at Pori. In addition, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Turku administers the educational health centre at Pori.
From Tampere University, the Faculties of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, Management and Business, and Social Sciences have operations at Pori. The education and research activities at Pori are supported by the support services of Tampere University.
