The Research Council of Finland has announced the results of the latest PROFI funding call, a scheme designed to strengthen the research profiles of Finnish universities. In this eighth PROFI call, Tampere University received close to €5.9 million. Funding was awarded to eight universities.

The Research Council of Finland allocated €100 million in the PROFI8 call, while universities had applied for nearly €200 million for more than 30 profiling areas.

Tampere University secured €5,895,000 for the funding period from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2030.

In their PROFI8 applications, universities sought for funding to strengthen their research profiles in strategically selected areas. The applications reflected the strategic renewal of the universities and their commitment to exploring timely research topics.

“The selected profiling areas address issues such as societal resilience, health, ageing and sustainable energy. In addition, many applications had identified aspects of societal impact. The research conducted in the profiling areas has extensive networks within business, industry, healthcare, schools or public administration,” said Professors Johanna Myllyharju and Kimmo Nuotio, chairpersons of the General Subcommittees of the Research Council of Finland.

Funding to strengthen the research profiles of universities in Finland has been available since 2015. In the latest call, the funding decisions were prepared by two General Subcommittees.

An international panel assessed the applications submitted by universities and conducted interviews with the applicants.
