Tampere University opens a new tenure track position in Artificial Intelligence and Media

The selected candidate is expected to bring strong research expertise on the interaction between artificial intelligence and media – for example the implications of generative AI, large language models and AI-driven systems for journalism, media culture, user experiences and communication processes. Applicants should be able to combine methodological competence in artificial intelligence with theoretical and analytical perspectives from communication and media studies, and be prepared to work in an interdisciplinary research environment.
The new position is part of a nationally significant initiative to advance research in this field. Three media foundations – the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, the Media Industry Research Foundation of Finland and the C. V. Åkerlund Media Foundation – have donated a professorship aimed at strengthening AI expertise in the Finnish media landscape. According to the foundations, artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming media structures, practices and influence, making the development of research and education essential for the future of the media sector.
Tampere University’s tenure track model provides a pathway towards a permanent academic position. Appointments at the Assistant Professor and Associate Professor levels are made for a fixed term of five years, with the possibility of tenure following successful performance. At the Professor level, the position is filled as a permanent appointment from the outset.
The application period is now open, and applications are submitted through Tampere University’s recruitment system:
