BioReno research project develops more environmentally friendly additional insulation solutions for renovation

The BioReno project, coordinated by Tampere University's Building Physics research group at Tampere University, studies the use of bio-based and low-carbon building materials to develop sustainable additional insulation solutions for renovation. BioReno is the first large-scale research project in this field in Finland. The study covers all stages of the construction process and the related requirements.
The BioReno project is led and implemented by Tampere University, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences XAMK and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. In addition, 20 companies are participating in the project. The total funding of the BioReno project is EUR 2.05 million. The project is funded by Business Finland and the above-mentioned parties.
The BioReno project consists of four experimental work packages, one analytical and one administrative work package:
- Thermal insulation solutions for ventilated roof structures (TAU)
- Insulated façade element concept for exterior walls (XAMK)
- Interior insulation solutions for exterior walls (TAU)
- Wood-based thermal insulation solutions (VTT)
- Life Cycle Assessment LCA and Techno-Economic Analysis TEA (XAMK)
- Management, dissemination and communication (TAU)
The project will run from April 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027. The results of the project will be reported as the project progresses.
