Science education at Tampere University

Science education inspires learners to explore research-based knowledge and develop an understanding of the importance of science and the scientific process across different disciplines. It aims to enhance scientific literacy and related competencies among children and young people. Through science education, learners are introduced to a wide range of research fields and topics, the methods used to generate knowledge, the work of researchers, and the purpose and impact of scientific inquiry.

Donations support science education for children and young people

Donations help us to provide children and young people with equal opportunities to discover the excitement of science and find their own educational paths. We support science education across learning communities, from the early childhood to the upper secondary level.

Goals for science education at Tampere University

  • We promote scientific literacy among children and young people. Scientific competence includes the ability to generate and evaluate knowledge, develop problem-solving skills, as well as understand and follow scientific developments.
  • We build science capital across Finland. A foundational understanding of science, combined with positive attitudes, knowledge and skills, fosters trust and advances equality across society.
  • We promote equal opportunities and accessibility in higher education. Science education empowers children and young people to explore higher education and discover their own educational paths, regardless of the academic influences in their living environment.

How Tampere University engages in science education?

We offer science education activities that encourage participation and collaboration among children and young people. These activities are coordinated by Juniversity in collaboration with educational institutions and involve faculties, research units and students from across Tampere University.

Juniversity provides children, young people and their teachers with diverse and multidisciplinary insights into the world of academia. Our activities are designed for learners from preschool to upper secondary school.

How can I get involved?

Children and young people can take part in our activities through their schools. If you are a parent, let your child’s teacher know about the opportunities we offer!

While Tampere University does not run a dedicated science club, we organise a variety of events that are open to all. One of the annual highlights is the Children’s Academy, a series of in-person, Finnish-speaking lectures tailored for children aged 7 to 10.

You should also keep an eye out for our Café Science lecture series, which introduces young people to the exciting opportunities offered by different fields of study.
