At Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK), the annual Sprint Innovation Festival is more than just an event—it’s an experience that redefines learning. This year, three double degree students from China had the opportunity to participate in the festival, and their journey was eye-opening.

A Tradition of Innovation

Sprint Innovation Festival has been organized within Tampere Universities for over ten years. The 2025 Sprint took place from March 5-14, with the theme Building a More Humane and Sustainable Future. The festival gathered up to 70 students from four different higher education institutions. During the Sprint Innovation Festival, interdisciplinary student teams work together to develop solutions

A New Approach to Learning

Coming from a traditional academic environment in their own country, where structured lectures and theoretical learning are the norm, the students were introduced to a different educational atmosphere at Sprint Innovation Festival. The students were thrilled by the opportunity to work on real business challenges using creativity, teamwork, and design thinking.

“Sprint Innovation Festival was both challenging and rewarding. From 8 AM to 4 PM, we engaged in high-intensity discussions and creative sessions every day. It was exhausting but also an opportunity for growth. I was fortunate to work with teammates from different countries, exploring a theme in depth and ultimately creating something meaningful together. Although the brainstorming sessions were long, they helped me push my boundaries and enhance my communication and innovation skills. I deeply understood the importance of teamwork—everyone needed to contribute, actively speak up, and listen patiently.” — Ruining Li

Real-World Challenges

During the festival, students were grouped into interdisciplinary teams, collaborating with peers from different cultural and academic backgrounds. They tackled actual business challenges, brainstorming, prototyping, and presenting their ideas to industry professionals.

“Presenting our final project in front of a large audience and receiving feedback was an unforgettable experience that boosted my confidence in public speaking.” — Ruining Li

The Power of Teamwork and Communication

One of the most valuable takeaways for the students was the emphasis on teamwork and open communication. Although the students were already accustomed to teamwork and presentations in their studies at TAMK, this experience pushed them even further. Working in a high-pressure, real-world setting enhanced their communication and problem-solving skills.

The students expressed that their double degree studies at TAMK had prepared them for teamwork and presentations and gave them confidence during the festival. They particularly enjoyed and appreciated the interdisciplinary teamwork.

“The most impactful part for me was the power of teamwork. We weren’t just completing a ‘task’; we were using design thinking to solve a problem with real societal value. Each team member brought a unique perspective, and through collaboration, I learned to express my ideas more clearly, adapt quickly, and take initiative.” — Nuo Wang

“In my team, everyone was a great listener, open to different perspectives. Through collaboration, I learned to articulate my thoughts more clearly and think from the user’s perspective.”---Weichao Han

Memorable Moments and Key Takeaways

For the Chinese double degree students, the Sprint Innovation Festival was a highlight of their time at TAMK. It not only broadened their perspectives but also equipped them with skills that are vital in today’s global job market. Some students even gained valuable friendships along the way.

“One of my biggest takeaways was meeting a group of warm and inclusive teammates. Beyond the project, we also bonded over fun activities like a stair race and the spaghetti tower challenge. This made me truly appreciate the strength of teamwork. It was an unforgettable and meaningful experience.” ---Weichao Han

A Lasting Impact

The Sprint Innovation Festival is an educational approach that empowers students to tackle real-world problems with creativity and collaboration. The Chinese double degree students left with not only new skills and experiences but also a fresh perspective on learning and innovation.

In students’ opinion, this kind of experience is something that AI cannot replace in education. They believe that while AI can provide comprehensive information, it cannot replicate the human interaction and spontaneous problem-solving that emerge from working in diverse teams. As Ruining Li pointed out “The most heartwarming part was the encouragement and support within the team.”
