Tampere Universities fly the flag for equality and diversity

Manse Pride, the local Pride event in Tampere organised by Sinuiksi ry, will take place from 8 to 14 June 2026. This year marks the twelfth Manse Pride, held under the theme Joy and Hope.
Tampere Universities participate in Manse Pride by flying the rainbow-coloured Pride flag across the campuses, demonstrating solidarity with and support for sexual and gender minorities.
Commitment to equality and non-discrimination
Tampere Universities are firmly committed to promoting equality and non-discrimination and to fostering an inclusive environment that is free from discrimination. In all our activities, we uphold the equal worth of all people and advance equality in broader society through our research and education.
“Universities have a responsibility to help build a society where everyone is free to study, work and participate as themselves. We are committed to developing a community that recognises diversity as a strength and in which everyone feels valued and welcome,” says Keijo Hämäläinen, President of Tampere University.
By flying the rainbow flag, a powerful symbol of the LGBTQ+ community, we demonstrate our support and celebrate diversity.
“The raising of the Pride flag sends an important message that equality, inclusion and respect for diversity are not merely principles, but must be reflected in the everyday activities of all our units,” says Katja Komulainen, Vice President for Education at Tampere University of Applied Sciences.
The universities’ students also celebrate the LQBTQ+ community. The student association Sekava ry drives the interest of LGBTQ+ students, arranges activities and promotes a sense of belonging among students.
“It is important to ensure the safety of minority groups and to protect their rights in contemporary society so that equality can truly thrive. All students should have a place where they feel they belong and are able to openly be themselves,” says Veera Lignell, Chair of the board of Sekava ry.

Joy and Hope
This year’s theme for Manse Pride reflects the idea that joy and hope sustain the LGBTQ+ community in the face of challenges.
“This theme perfectly captures the positive atmosphere and strong sense of community that define Manse Pride. At a time when public debate can often be dark and polarised, it is essential to ensure that everyone feels heard. It is important that Tampere Universities continue to promote equality for all,” says Tamko’s Chair Saara Ahola.
Joy and hope also arise from the diversity of the community and from celebrating it.
“The Tampere Universities community and its student body are highly diverse, and there must be a place for everyone within this community. Pride is an important reminder that this diversity should be celebrated and that we must actively work to ensure an inclusive environment for all, not only during Pride Week but throughout the year,” says TREY’s Chair of the Board Tami Nordström.
Lectures on queer history in Finland
Tampere University’s Equal Opportunities Committee and the student union TREY will host two lectures on queer history in Finland. The lectures will be delivered by Tuula Juvonen, University Lecturer in Gender Studies and Adjunct Professor of Women’s Studies, and Joe Jukes, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Tampere University.
The lectures will take place at Cafe & Aula Toivo in the Main Building (Päätalo) on the city centre campus on Thursday 11 June from 16:00 to 17:30. The event is open to all.
Manse Pride march
During Manse Pride Week, Tampere will march for human rights on Saturday 13 June. Tampere University’s student union TREY, the Students’ Union of Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Tamko) and the student club Sekava will have a dedicated student block in the march, which all students are welcome to join.
The student block will assemble at Tampere Central Square on 13 June at 13:30, with the march departing at 14:00. The procession will proceed eastwards and conclude at Sorsapuisto Park, where the main celebration will take place. Students are warmly invited to join the march and show their support for the LGBTQ+ community!
