Embedded systems is a multidisciplinary field that combines electronics and software engineering to design intelligent devices and systems that are resource-aware, dependable, and sustainable.
As an embedded systems designer, you are a key player in industrial electronics projects. You are proficient in digital electronics, and often skilled in mixed-mode design, as well as embedded software design. One of your main areas of expertise is bridging the functional realms of an electronic device. Often, an embedded systems designer can operate both as a designer and as a leader of a team of hardware and software specialists.
What Will You Learn?
The embedded systems specialisation focuses on the seamless integration of electronics and software with attention to diverse application domains and user-specific requirements. Delivered through a research-based teaching approach, the curriculum emphasises the practical application of theory, enabling students to innovate and implement industrially relevant design solutions. The course topics include, for example:
- Microcontrollers
- Embedded Linux drivers
- Internet of Things (IoT) systems
- Architecture of both hardware and software
- Embedded systems productization
The core technical topics of the track are supported by courses on scientific writing, language skills, and orientation to professional life. Through elective studies, you can broaden your expertise in related application domains, for example, information security, sensor technology, and biomedical engineering.
Why Choose Embedded Systems?
The global embedded systems market is worth 120 billion USD and it is growing rapidly due to the increased demand for IoT devices, automotive advancements, healthcare technologies, and industrial automation. Consequently, the demand for embedded systems experts is high.
Tampere Electronics Research Centre (ERC) is a multidisciplinary community where students, academics, and industrial collaborators meet and network. For embedded systems students, ERC provides an excellent environment for identifying supervisors for their thesis and engaging with research topics aligned with current academic and industrial challenges.
