Little is known about the effects of work communities' different value-bases and their implementation in practice. This research aims to produce new scientific information about how modern leadership grounded in practical implementation of different value-bases affects high performance and happiness in work communities. The research produces practical information that can be used in developing working life, and responds to the societal need on how to build sustainable working life.

Background

The ongoing transformation of working life demands more from leadership than ever before. Modern leadership grounded in organisational values can serve as a compass for navigating change, as it has been shown to enhance both performance and wellbeing in work communities. However, research indicates that only one third of leaders lead organisational values effectively in practice.

Goal

This research examines how different organisational values and the practices of modern, values-driven leadership — including broad employee influence — are reflected in work community performance and wellbeing. We also aim to identify differences and shared factors across organisations that promote wellbeing and successful work outcomes.

Participation

The study is conducted as an anonymous comparative longitudinal survey (FI/EN) in multiple organisations. It examines employees’ experiences in three phases, first focussing on leadership and opportunities for influence, then organisational values, work and the work environment, and finally, experiences of performance and wellbeing.

We ask the participating organisations (with min. responders = 30) are asked to send the initial participation invitation to their personnel. Completing each survey phase takes around 10 minutes. Neither participating organisations nor individual respondents can be identified in any published results.

Impact

Participating organisations will receive:

  • A clear overview of the current state: A summary of employees’ experiences of values-driven leadership, work and the work environment, and how these factors contribute to wellbeing, quality of motivation, and success — including comparisons to the overall dataset.
  • Tools for development: Insights into how values-driven leadership and other organisational practices can be strengthened to further promote performance and wellbeing in the work community, also supporting high-quality motivation.
  • Business benefits: These factors are known to enhance not only wellbeing but also employee commitment, innovativeness, performance, and the organisation’s financial success.
  • Societal impact: The study is scientifically and societally significant both in Finland and internationally.
