Identification and adaption of new skills needed for the green transition in building sector

Sustainable and energy-efficient technologies for buildings have been available for some time. However, the construction sector remains a significant contributor to environmental challenges, including excessive material use and energy consumption. In response to climate change and evolving regulations, the sector faces an urgent need to make a transformative leap toward a more sustainable future.

This research hypothesizes that there is a critical skills gap in effectively implementing the technologies required for this green transition in real-world construction projects.

Using concrete, science-based methodologies, the study aims to comprehensively identify the new green skills needed within the construction sector, role by role. The research incorporates a multi-level synthesis that considers all stakeholders, lifecycle stages, sustainability megatrends, and relevant technical and project management aspects.

The ultimate goal is to deliver results that are immediately applicable to companies and educational institutions, supporting initiatives such as lifelong learning and just-in-time training. The research also seeks to address broader questions, including:

  • Is the current education system sufficient to enable the green transition?
  • Are there adequate learning materials, guides, and other resources?
  • Are construction companies offering the necessary services for sustainable practices?
  • Should new roles and responsibilities be incorporated into building project contracts?
