Coronavirus cases have been identified among exchange students who have arrived at Tampere Universities. After considering the situation, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied sciences (TAMK) have decided to suspend the arrival of incoming exchange students from abroad.

In late 2020 and early 2021, Tampere University have welcomed some 200 exchange students and TAMK a little under 70. Approximately 70 admitted exchange students are yet to arrive.

After consulting with the public health authorities on 22 January 2021, Tampere University and TAMK have decided to suspend the arrival of international exchange students for the duration of the spring semester. The decision was made to protect the health and safety of students and staff amidst the quickly changing scale of the pandemic. In addition, we will assess the situation concerning all forms of international mobility to determine whether it is necessary to restrict mobility.

Our International Mobility Services will inform our partner universities and personally contact all students who will be affected by the decision.

Exchange students who have already arrived in Tampere will continue their studies remotely. Because of the identified coronavirus cases, Tampere University and TAMK have contacted all international exchange students by email and phone.

The circumstances of the contacted students have been satisfactory, and students who have been placed in isolation or quarantine have been provided with clear instructions by the public health authorities. During the weekend, testing will also be organized free of charge for exchange students who are not showing any symptoms of illness.

We have been working very closely together with the public health authorities for the past days. The public health authorities continue tracing the chains of infection. The University and TAMK will maintain regular contact with exchange students and provide necessary advice and support.

Throughout the pandemic the University and TAMK have operated within the framework of the instructions provided by the public authorities and comprehensively and proactively informed exchange students about staying safe. It is very unfortunate that new coronavirus cases have nevertheless been identified.

Tampere Universities emphasize the importance of following all safety precautions relating to the pandemic both on campus and during free time.
