Tampere University of Applied Sciences’ Principal Lecturer Nina Kilkku was elected to continue as President of the European Psychiatric Nurses organisation (Horatio). The election was made in Horatio’s board meeting in Copenhagen.

Horatio is a European parent organisation on mental health nursing. It is comprised of field-related organisations and associations from more than 20 countries, including the Finnish Nurses Association. Horatio aims at affecting European decision-making regarding mental health nursing and promoting development of mental health nursing practice, education, administration and research.

“During the past year, our operation has been very active and we have for example made an agreement with the International Council of Nurses (ICN) to internationally bring forward mental health nursing viewpoints more powerfully. Cooperation with other international and European mental health organisations and Horatio’s national member organisations continues actively. An example of this is cooperation on the mental health services reform in the Czech Republic,” Kilkku tells.

Social inclusion, respect, trust – at the core of mental health nursing

Social inclusion has strongly been brought forward in European mental health nursing also at the political level, for example by Mental Health European (MHE). Horatio as its member organisation has also supported these initiatives.

“The reality of social inclusion can be seen in everyday mental health nursing, how we understand and meet each other when one searches for help and another offers it, how we respect one another,” Kilkku says.
