Jorma Eloranta elected as Chair of the Board of Tampere University

The Board of Tampere University convened on Monday 3 January. The Board members elected vuorineuvos (Finnish honorary title) Jorma Eloranta as Chair of the Board and Professor Jussi Välimaa as Vice Chair.

The terms of three previous Board members expired at the end of 2021. As proposed by the Board Appointment Committee, the Academic Board of Tampere University appointed vuorineuvos Jorma Eloranta, Professor Jukka Törrönen and Professor Jussi Välimaa as the new Board members.

The existing members DTech Anne Jalkala, Professor Johanna Kantola, MSocSc Ville Tynkkynen and Professor Outi Vaarala continue serving on the Board of Tampere University.

Vuorineuvos Jorma Eloranta has chaired a number of companies, foundations, associations and communities for more than 50 years and worked as the CEO of different companies for 28 years. He is currently also serving as the Chair of the Board of the Finnish Fair Foundation.

“I will begin my chairmanship by taking a closer look at the broad range of activities going on across Tampere Universities. I will be working to gain an overall view of the current activities and foster an atmosphere of collaboration and trust,” Jorma Eloranta said at the Board meeting.

Professor Jussi Välimaa has studied higher education from different perspectives for more than thirty years while maintaining an active presence in academic societies and heading national and international research projects. Välimaa is currently the director of the Finnish Institute for Educational Research (FIER) at the University of Jyväskylä.

Professor Jussi Välimaa likewise emphasised the importance of collaboration and open dialogue in building trust across the university community. “Open and critical debate and discussion are the  University’s strengths. Effective collaboration between the Academic Board and the university community is important for creating a constructive atmosphere.”
