He splits his time between research, teaching and societal interaction and holds a professorship in paediatrics at Tampere University as well as a part-time appointment as chief physician in the Department of Paediatrics at Tampere University Hospital.

What does the scientific community mean to you?

“Colleagues and friendship. In my research career spanning nearly 40 years, I have developed close friendships with my colleagues in Tampere, throughout Finland and internationally. And I am making new friends all the time – it is one of the perks of this profession.”

What do you expect from the future?

“My research interests focus on child health in low-income countries but I also have a mission to drive forward research on all aspects of paediatric health in Tampere. I teach medical students, supervise doctors who are specialising in paediatrics and take part in developing the services and activities of the Centre for Children and Adolescents at Tampere University Hospital. I am also currently the Chairman of the Finnish Paediatric Society (FPS).”
