Are you interested in helping to create the sustainable cities of the future?

The world is facing key challenges such as a changing climate, biodiversity loss, social justice issues, and poverty, and cities are key arenas for addressing these challenges. Tampere University’s Sustainable Urban Development Bachelor’s degree programme teaches the new generation of experts to apply multidisciplinary expertise to help address these challenges and develop the sustainable cities of the future.

About the Social Science specialisation

The Sustainable Urban Development programme provides integrated, multidisciplinary teaching related to urban development and sustainability. It consists of three spesialisations, Administrative Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology, which students select when applying.

Students in the social science spesialisation study basic and intermediate studies in social sciences, developing a broad theoretical understanding of societal change, and applying this understanding to develop solutions to challenges of well-being and sustainable development. Shared courses with students from other spesialisations help you understand urban development from several perspectives, develop interdisciplinary thinking skills, and identify novel and constructive ways of solving complex problems.

Urban Labs

Through challenge-based Urban Lab courses, students are engaged in real-life urban development projects in collaboration with organizations such as the City of Tampere. These courses provide students the opportunity to engage with local urban planners, citizens, and organisations to help identify and understand real-world development challenges, and work in interdisciplinary teams to co-create solutions. You can find out more about the Urban Labs in the Tampere University Urban Lab Blog.

Opportunities

This programme aims to meet the societal and industry need for more societal and environmental problem solvers. Graduates from the social science spesialisation of the Bachelor's programme have found employment in city organizations responsible for urban development and international affairs, research projects within the academia, and companies focusing on urban planning and public participation. The graduates have been appreciated for their interdisciplinary thinking and interpersonal and group work skills gained during their studies.
