What are the promises of ‘green AI’? Can we use AI in an ecologically sustainable way in our work and research?

While AI is a key driver of technological development, it also has a significant impact on carbon emissions. For instance, training neural networks, data transmission, and the devices themselves consume substantial amounts of energy and environmental resources. As part of everyday working life, such issues are often complex to understand and solve. The workshop will address key questions of AI ecological sustainability, discuss the main environmental burdens, and assess and explore ways in which individuals can practically foster AI sustainability in their work.

Speakers and their topics:

  • Janne Kalliola – There Is No AI on a Dead Planet, or How to Make AI Use Greener
  • Erkki Mervaala – GenAI explosion: Thoughts on systemic risks and sustainability
  • Johanna Ahola-Launonen – The Politics of Technological Hope: Promises and Paradoxes of "Green" AI
