In his doctoral dissertation, M.Sc. Jianfeng Yang explored how tiny flying robots can move through the air without motors or onboard power. Inspired by wind-dispersed seeds such as dandelions and maple samaras, the research shows how light-responsive soft materials allow miniature flyers to glide, change shape, and steer in mid-air using light alone. The work demonstrates a new, energy-efficient approach to aerial robotics, opening possibilities for lightweight environmental sensing and airborne exploration.

The doctoral dissertation of M.Sc. Jianfeng Yang in the field of material science titled Light-Tuned Actuators for the Passive Flight Modes will be publicly examined at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University on 9 January 2026. 

The Opponent will be Professor Taylor H. Ware from the Texas A&M University in United States. The Custos will be Associate Professor Hao Zeng from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Tampere.
