Work ability assessments, medical statements, and artificial intelligence

Tampere University
Duration of project1.11.2024–15.7.2026

The goal of conducting a work ability assessment is to evaluate the patient's remaining work capacity and provide to patient and professionals in health care, social insurance, and occupational pension insurance an understanding of the patient's current situation.

It is not yet known how well artificial intelligence (AI) is suited for making work ability and rehabilitation assessments and whether there are factors that either enable or hinder the application of AI in these assessments. This research by the University of Tampere's occupational health and occupational medicine research group aims to address.

The research consists of two parts. The first part (1) investigates doctors' experiences regarding the workload of B-statements related to work ability assessments. The second part (2) explores, through a scoping review and expert interviews, the potential of AI to assist in making work ability assessments and drafting related statements.
