The research focuses on evaluating and developing methods of emotional regulation and social function assessment and support in the context of neuropsychological rehabilitation of children and adolescents. The research is carried out at the Psychology Clinic PSYKE.
Background
PSYKE does neuropsychological rehabilitation work mainly as a purchased service. The majority of clients are school-age children with developmental neuropsychiatric difficulties, such as Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder. In these cases, the difficulties of emotional regulation and social interaction are typical and severely impair an individual's ability to function.
This study develops and evaluates methods for evaluating and supporting emotional regulation and social functioning. The research project consists of two sub-researches.
The main objective of the first substudy is to evaluate the survey indicators selected for the second substudy, and to collect Finnish reference data for them.
In the second part of the study, material is collected as part of PSYKE's client work in neuropsychological rehabilitation. Participation in the data collection is voluntary for customers, and refusal to do so does not affect the customer's care.
Goal
In the study, we develop and experiment with new assessment methods that would be suitable for helping with the preparation of rehabilitation goals and monitoring progress.
During the pilot phase of the study, emotional regulation rehabilitation modules are developed. These methods and means related to the identification and regulation of emotions are compiled into short modules to be implemented in a few rehabilitation sessions. Modules are developed using methods of cognitive behavioral therapy in particular. After the pilot phase, modules that are suited to our customers' objectives and that strengthen the child's skills will be introduced based on individual assessment data, and the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of the modules will be studied.
The research project also develops and studies the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of the pair rehabilitation model.
