Local and regional elections will be held simultaneously in Finland for the first time in spring 2025. This creates a new situation for voters.
The central theme of the research project is the comparison of municipal and regional elections. The project examines whether the simultaneity of the elections complicated or clarified the electoral landscape, and how this affected voter turnout and to what extent votes were split between two different parties.
The project also investigates whether regional differentiation can be observed in Finland regarding the forms of political (dis)trust, and how citizens are divided on how major issues of welfare and equality at the municipal and regional levels should be resolved.
