Social Energy - Prosumer Centric Energy Ecosystem (ProCem)

Tampere University

Internet-of-Things (IoT) based technology platform will be carried out in the research project for the exploitation of various distributed energy resources, taking into account both the electricity market and power system management perspectives. The technology platform enables to study roles, behaviour, needs and requirements of prosumers and new kind of business models and ecosystems in a new operational environment.

By the concrete pilots we will get experience on the technology platform but also on business opportunities of new functionalities. Realization of the research project calls for interdisciplinary approach and it is carried out in collaboration of research groups of four departments at Tampere University of Technology (TUT). The overall budget of the project is 1,2 M¬.

Background

The realization of the research project calls for interdisciplinary approach and it is carried out in collaboration of research groups of four departments at Tampere University of Technology (i.e departments of Electrical Energy Engineering, Pervasive Computing, Automation Science and Engineering, and Industrial Management) and co-operation with 15 industrial partners. The research project is carried out from August 2016 to the end of March 2018. The continuation project is under planning.

Goal

Electrical energy system is under big changes. In the future it will consist of more and more various kind of distributed energy resources (e.g. distributed generation, controllable loads, energy storages, electric vehicles), which can be used in real time operation of the whole system, if business models, real time data management and services offered to customers enable new kind of ecosystems. Large-scale digitalization of end-customers (e.g. households, bigger buildings) enable real-time and comprehensive demand response and management of distributed energy resources.

This calls for the development of technology, but also new players and emerging business ecosystems. Demand response is one of main key issues in adaptation of energy production and consumption and in creating flexibility to integrated electrical energy system.

Funding source

Business Finland, over 15 industrial partners and Sitra.
