TAMK's areas of strength in RDI

TAMK's research, development and innovation (RDI) activities focus on five strategic areas of strength, where multidisciplinary expertise, practical development and close partnership cooperation meet. We respond to the key challenges of our time under the leadership of research groups, support the competitiveness of companies and public organisations, promote well-being and create new, sustainable solutions.

Health and welfare in society

We promote health and a well‑functioning society through multidisciplinary collaboration with social and health‑care professionals. A well‑functioning society is capable of responding effectively to changing conditions, protecting its most vulnerable members and ensuring the continuity of services even in times of crisis.

Our research and development areas include strengthening health, wellbeing, inclusion and everyday agency from the perspectives of individuals, families and communities. We focus on preventive, personalised and impactful approaches and take a broad view of safety and workplace wellbeing. In personalised health promotion, we utilise, for example, genomic data, digital health and wellbeing technologies, and artificial intelligence.

We also develop multidisciplinary service and operating models that improve the effectiveness and accessibility of social and health‑care services.

Our activities are guided by ethics, equality, cultural sensitivity and inclusion – key values in promoting wellbeing and health.

Innovative pedagogy and education

We develop the quality of teaching and learning in educational institutions, organisations and communities. We study how pedagogy can support learning and participation in different environments. Our research‑, development‑ and innovation‑oriented approach enables the application and further development of the latest theories and pedagogical practices in real learning environments.

Our research areas include, among others, vocational education, digital pedagogy and educational digitalisation, work‑based learning solutions, language and communication learning and teaching in diverse environments, pedagogy that supports sustainable development, STEM pedagogy, and new models of learning.

These elements form an area of strength that renews pedagogy in line with evolving learning needs and societal objectives.

Sustainable and smart industry

We advance sustainable and smart industry by accelerating data‑, AI‑ and technology‑driven solutions that transform industrial operating models. The requirements brought about by digitalisation, automation and low‑carbon pathways are rapidly reshaping the industrial competitive landscape. We support this transformation by building future‑proof sustainable and intelligent solutions together with industrial stakeholders.

Our research and development activities focus on areas such as Industry X.0, electric transport and smart cities, safety technologies, smart and resilient energy systems, and the utilisation of virtual technologies. We make versatile use of both commercial and open‑source platforms and technologies.

We operate actively in international networks and work closely with actors across various industrial sectors in the region to promote the renewal and development of industry.

Sustainable construction technologies and bioeconomy

We develop products, processes, systems, business and management in the construction and bioeconomy so that technical, economic, ecological and social perspectives are in balance.

We study the circular economy business of the built environment, the use of low-carbon building materials, as well as the energy efficiency of buildings and the role of building technology in the transition towards renewable forms of energy.

In the bioeconomy, we focus on the sustainable utilisation of material flows and new bioeconomy and circular economy technologies that support climate change mitigation and the regional green transition.

Our operations are guided by close cooperation with companies, research networks and co-creation platforms. In them, the development and piloting of new solutions takes place in a practical and authentic operating environment.

Value creation and creative economy

We develop value‑creation models by combining methods from business and the arts and by making use of emerging technologies. Our aim is to support growth and enhance the ability of Finnish companies to respond to new and rapidly changing operating environments. We achieve this by researching, developing and innovating practices, products and services that generate added value for people, businesses and society. Value creation is reflected, for example, in new business opportunities, wellbeing and sustainable solutions.

Within the field of the creative economy, we research and develop operating models for the creative industries. We combine creative expertise, technology and business, generating value in the form of experiences, cultural services, content, international markets, and new ways of working and operating.

In a changing operating environment, we educate and support companies in developing their activities with a focus on safety perspectives. Through our projects, we renew organisations’ strategic safety management, safety culture, resilience and operational continuity.

Collaboration with companies is based on practical development, a culture of experimentation and joint pilot projects that rapidly produce results that can be tested and applied.
