Niitty 2 - Working together with immigrant families for a better everyday life
The project will be implemented between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2026. The project coordinated by Tampere University of Applied Sciences aims to improve the quality of family services in order to narrow the welfare differences and reduce inequality caused by the background of immigrant children. During the project families of immigrant children, family service professionals (social and health services, early childhood education) and 3rd sector operators work together to achieve the goals of Niitty 2 -project. In the project, the everyday needs of families with immigrant children are identified, guidance material and know-how are created for those working with families and for self-study of immigrants. The data is collected in the Perheinfo portal for all available. The long term aim of the project is to improve welfare and integration of the immigrant families.
Background
The need for the project emerged during the Niitty 1 project (Peer-Supported Family Coaching Model for Immigrants 2018–2020). Family services are an important part of supporting the integration of immigrant families and preventing social exclusion. Children in immigrant families face several risk factors that threaten their well-being (e.g., lifestyle, low level of education), and they are at a higher risk of social exclusion compared to children from native families. More generally, it has been found that in OECD countries, 10–20 percent of children are at risk of educational exclusion due to economic, cultural, or linguistic reasons. This particularly affects children with an immigrant background. Professionals from various sectors work with immigrant families. The project aims to create new forms of collaboration between different professional groups and to produce tools and guidance materials.
Goal
The needs of immigrant families regarding family services and guidance have been identified. Guidance materials have been produced for immigrant families as well as for professionals in social and health services and early childhood education. Peer instructor networks have started their activities. The quality and equality of family services have been strengthened nationally through the results of the project and the Family Info material portal.
Impact
Services for immigrants have improved, and the expertise of professionals has been strengthened.
