Find an intern at Tampere University

When you offer an internship to a student, you gain fresh insights and the latest knowledge directly from a university, and you will help the student gain valuable work experience. At the same time, you can create networks with potential future employees for your business and field. This page provides information for employers about internships and instructions for hiring an intern from Tampere University. Good to know is that in certain circumstances, Tampere University offers financial support to hire an intern.

What is an internship?

An internship resembles a fixed-term employment relationship in many ways. Especially in paid internships, the same rights and obligations apply to the employer and employee as in other employment relationships.

However, internships have some specific features:

  • Duration. Internships usually have a required minimum duration, which is often 3 months.
  • Goal orientation. Tampere University’s degree programmes define learning outcomes for the student’s internship on whose basis the student reflects and defines their personal goals. The employer can also be involved in setting these goals. The intern is expected to gain work experience in their field and relevant tasks. They should be able to utilise the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies and have the opportunity to learn new things during the internship.
  • Specific tasks. Interns’ tasks should be planned so that they can complete them under supervision during the internship period. The tasks can vary depending on the field and the employer's needs. Suitable tasks can also be considered together with the intern being hired.
  • Guidance and feedback. The intern should generally have one or more designated supervisors who represent the employer. The supervisor’s main task is to support the intern’s learning and work process by providing feedback and guidance on the assigned tasks.

Consider the following when searching for an intern

  1. The intern’s task(s) and team.
  2. The intern’s supervisor. The supervisor is responsible for the factual content of the internship as well as being available to the student, advising on the tasks and providing feedback.
  3. The skills the intern must have before starting the internship.
  4. Language requirements and the language of the internship advertisement (Finnish or English). Tampere University has students who are native Finnish speakers, who have excellent Finnish language skills, who are practising Finnish and who speak other languages entirely. Consider the language skills the intern needs and clearly state any language requirements in your job add.
  5. Salary. Remember to include salary information in the add. Please note that Tampere University does not publish internship adds where the salary is below the sum agreed by all Finnish universities together (1,463€/month in 2026; the sum is annually agreed).
  6. The preliminary duration and time of the internship.
  7. Flexibility and accessibility of the job, for example, teleworking, part-time work, flexible working hours as well as the accessibility of your premises. Please mention the flexibilities you offer in your job add.

Find an international intern

Students from all over the world study with us. An international intern brings new thinking and expertise and helps your company expand international networks. We offer support and guidance for hiring international students.

Considering diversity and equality benefits employers

Safe and equal working life is built through cooperation. Tampere University aims to ensure that students are in an equal position in their studies, including internships. It is important that internship placements are safe for students from various minoritised groups and that all students are protected from discrimination and harassment.

Talking with the intern can help find the best ways to support the success of the internship. Even small actions can often make a big difference. Such adjustments may relate to e.g. the working hours, work methods, working language or workstation. Clear meeting practices, instructions, and guidance benefit all interns. You can also invite the intern to familiarise themselves with the workplace before the internship begins.

Other means to reach a suitable intern

Many internship positions may be suitable for both Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences students. You can also search for an intern from among TAMK students. In that case, also publish the advertisement on TAMK's JobTeaser service.

Instructions for informing TAMK students about internship placements

Student guilds and associations also forward recruitment advertisements to their members, each according to their own practices. Enquire about cooperation opportunities directly from suitable associations.

Tips for successful internships

  • Plan the initial orientation of the internship and allocate sufficient time for it. Ensure the student knows what is expected of them.
  • Enable easy communication with the supervisor. Agree on when and how the student can contact the supervisor if they encounter problems or are uncertain about their tasks.
  • Ensure sufficient supervision. In addition to on-the-job guidance, schedule guidance discussions at the beginning, middle and end of the internship. These discussions allow both the student and supervisor to talk about the internship and clarify the goals.
  • Remember to provide encouraging feedback. Please note that the intern could be your future colleague or cooperation partner.
  • You can also use materials put together in national university cooperation, such as general information about internshipstips for remote internships.

Tampere University’s internship voucher

Some internships allow the employer to receive financial support from the University for hiring an intern.

Faculties allocate internship support to students and the student is responsible for applying for the voucher from the faculty.

To qualify for supported internships:

The internship must meet the content and duration requirements set by the degree programme. A supported internship must always last longer than 2 months (9 weeks) even if the degree programme’s requirements can be met by a shorter internship period.

  • The intern’s workplace must appoint a supervisor responsible for the content of the internship at the workplace.
  • The intern must be in a fixed-term employment relationship with the workplace during the internship. The employer must draft a written employment contract with the student for the internship period. Both the employment contract and the internship agreement are needed. The workplace is responsible for the student in accordance with the Employment Contracts and other obligations of the employer.
  • The intern’s salary must be determined in accordance with the collective agreement in the field, or, if there is no collective agreement, the full-time salary must be at least the minimum salary agreed by Finnish universities (€1,463/month in 2026). Tampere University does not grant internship vouchers for unpaid internships.
  • The internship support is only granted for internships in Finland and in some cases for internships abroad where the employer is Finnish (e.g. Finnish embassies abroad).

The amount of the support is up to €1,800 per internship, and the employer invoices the support from the University after the internship ends. Internship support is not the same as the salary paid to the intern, and the support amount is not dependent on the actual salary paid to the student.

Internship agreement

A written internship agreement is prepared for each intern before the start of the internship period. The agreement is made in two copies between the employer and the student’s faculty.

The agreement records the support granted to the intern’s workplace, the duration of the internship, agreed tasks and the designated supervisor.

Any changes to the internship period must always be made in writing. The student does not have the right to independently agree with the internship workplace on changes to the internship period or internship support.
