Tampere University and TAMK join the national Opin.fi service – open studies from Finnish higher education institutions now available in one place

Opin.fi offers thousands of opportunities for learning
The Opin.fi service is open to all learners and does not require prior studies at a higher education institution. The service is designed for individuals exploring new interests or professions as well as those looking to change careers or upgrade their professional skills while employed.
Courses are available in Finnish, Swedish and English and can be completed online or in person. The fields of study range from sustainable development and new technologies to wellbeing, health and the security sector.
The service offers studies not only across a wide range of fields but also in different formats. In addition to courses, Opin.fi features alternative ways to build competence, such as podcasts and webinars.
Towards comprehensive offerings in continuous learning
At Tampere University, open courses offered by the Open University have been selected to represent the multidisciplinary University in the national Opin.fi service. In addition to credit-bearing courses, the University offers non-credit learning opportunities (such as podcasts, events and videos) through Opin.fi to support independent study and allow learners to explore timely topics at their own pace.
Marja Sutela, Vice President for Education at Tampere University, is pleased that the Opin.fi service was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Finnish higher education institutions.
“With the world of work changing and digitalisation advancing, the demand for continuous learning is growing. Following the launch of Opin.fi, learners no longer need to visit the website of each university to browse Open University studies. Instead, they can explore a wide range of offerings through a single platform. In the future, the selection of studies available through Opin.fi will expand further and Opin.fi's use will expand to education leading to a degree” says Marja Sutela.
A unique new service for different target groups
In the spring of 2025, the offerings made available by Tampere University of Applied Sciences via Opin.fi include open studies offered by the School of Social Services and Health Care, language and communication studies as well as free non-credit learning resources, such as podcasts, textbooks and video lectures. Later this year, these offerings will expand to also include other fields represented at TAMK.
The Opin.fi service provides flexible learning opportunities for both working professionals and young people who are still exploring their educational or career paths.
“We hope this new service helps individuals interested in continuous learning find us more easily and open up new opportunities for self-development to all learners, regardless of their circumstances,” says Vice President of TAMK Katja Komulainen.
Komulainen points out that Opin.fi also challenges higher education institutions to rethink their operational models.
“TAMK is working together with other higher education institutions to build this new service that is unique on a global scale. This motivates us, as education providers, to develop new working methods and diverse learning pathways for broader target groups, both through collaborative efforts among higher education institutions and together with different stakeholders.”
37 higher education institutions – a single national service
Opin.fi was developed through close collaboration between Finnish higher education institutions and future users. Learners and higher education institutions were engaged in long-term development efforts to ensure the service meets user needs as closely as possible.
Although Opin.fi has now been launched, its development continues and the range of available studies will constantly grow and diversify. At this stage, 29 universities and universities of applied sciences offer courses through the service. The remaining eight Finnish higher education institutions will join the service later this year.
Learners can already start building their own unique learning modules through the platform. In the future, Opin.fi will also offer tailored study recommendations based on users’ interests.
