Conferment of doctoral degrees | Tampere universities

The ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees is the highest and most prestigious academic celebration and a tradition that spans several centuries. The new Tampere University will hold its first conferment ceremony in August 2022. Doctoral graduates from the new Tampere University and those doctoral graduates from Tampere University of Technology and the University of Tampere who have not yet participated in a conferment ceremony will be conferreed at the all faculties’ joint event. The first honorary doctors of the new Tampere University will also be inaugurated at the ceremony.

The conferment celebrations consist of several events that will extend across three days, 12 - 14 August. The general public will be able to take part in the festivities on Saturday 13 August.

The main event, the Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral degrees, will take place at Tampere Hall (address: Yliopistonkatu 55, 33100 Tampere) at 12–15. The audience should be seated in the Large Hall by 12:00. All members of the audience are expected to dress in a formal manner (dark-coloured formal attire, no pocket squares, gloves, flashy jewellery or furs; major decorations and a doctor’s hat are worn, if any). The Conferment Ceremony will also be broadcast live online.

After the Ceremony, an Academic Procession will walk to Tampere Cathedral (address: Tuomiokirkonkatu 3b, 33100 Tampere) fior the Conferment Church Service. The Church Service will begin at 16:30 and it is an open event.
