During the four-month pilot phase, the functionality of the APC support funding criteria and the centralized payment of article processing charges (APCs) were tested. The APC support funding project ended on December 31, 2020, and at the same time, the opportunity for grant holders to apply for APC support funding also ended.

In the autumn 2020, Tampere University Library piloted the payment of article processing charges of open access publications centrally in the form of APC support funding. The target group of the pilot phase was researchers working in the autumn as grant holders at Tampere University. The grant holders were to have concluded a resource agreement with the University for this purpose. The APC support funding was available for scientific articles which were accepted for publication during the pilot phase.

During the pilot phase, APC support funding was actively applied for and we awarded funding to ten eligible grant holders, whose articles will be published openly in the publication channels of their choice. We received positive feedback on supporting the work of grant holders by covering the APCs of their articles. In addition to this, both grant holders and other members of the university community gave us valuable feedback on the criteria we selected, and we would like to thank those who provided feedback for their insightful comments. The feedback and knowledge gained during the project will be taken into account in the ongoing development work related to payment of the APCs.

In 2021, there will be changes how article processing charges will be covered for research projects receiving funding from Academy of Finland in the 2021 calls. In the coming calls of Academy of Finland, researchers will no longer include costs related to open access publishing in their funding applications. The Library will cover the article processing charges of these research projects. This change does not apply to projects already funded by the Academy of Finland or to research funding granted under previous conditions. Researchers affiliated with the Tampere higher education community are eligible for a wide range of discounts on APCs and they also can publish open access without paying a fee. The terms and instructions of the discounts are available in our open access guide (linkki https://libguides.tuni.fi/open-access/discounts).
