Tell us about yourself and your studies

Hi, My name is Muhammad Shahzaib Ali. I am from Pakistan. I did a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology. I am currently enrolled in the Master's Degree Education in Computing Sciences - Statistical Data Analytics as a 1st-year student at Tampere University.

Why did you choose your current programme?

Growing up, I have been influenced by my father’s work as an analyst. I was amazed at how he used data to map the financial performance of his organization and analyze business performance and market conditions to create forecasts. This initially piqued my interest in Analytics. Furthermore, perusals of articles like (Davenport & Patil, 2012), titled “Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21 Century”, and the success stories of influential people like Mr. D.J. Patil deeply inclined me towards the essence of Data Science. I had opted for the Operations Management course during my bachelor's from where I had acquired rudimentary principles of this subject. The course turned out to be quite fun thus I became inclined to take up Data Science and Analytics as my master's major.

Can you share with us your experiences in Finland and Tampere?

It's been a little more than 2 months since I came to Tampere, Finland and it has been an amazing experience. Most of the people in Tampere are very well-versed in the English language, thus it was very easy to ask for help initially if I could not understand something, and people here in Finland are very kind and quite happy to help. Tampere is a very beautiful and peaceful place to live in. There are a few lakes that one can visit and also try new food here as well. The community here is quite diverse, which makes it easier in integrating with them.

What would you say to someone planning to study and live in Tampere?

I would highly recommend Tampere University as I feel that its reputation as a leading university in academia and research is well earned due to its quality of education and the way of teaching practiced here. The city in itself is very student-friendly. One can easily find student accommodation which is equipped with all the necessary facilities. The university is easily accessible through public transport and a lot of small events are organized sometimes by the student guild or by the city itself to keep things exciting.
