Hi! I'm Emma. I moved to Tampere in August 2020 to study Security and Safety Management in the Security Governance track.

Tell us about yourself and your studies

My name is Emma, I am originally from Germany but have lived in England, the Netherlands, and now Finland throughout my life. I am doing my master's here in Safety and Security Management with a focus on Security Governance.

Why did you choose your current programme?

My background is in project management and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. I was particularly interested in Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and found this program on security that ticked all the right boxes. It also offers many free-choice credits so that I can focus on and further develop my interests.

Can you share with us your experiences in Finland and Tampere?

At first, I was scared of moving to a country so far up north. Finland is known for its cold and dark winters. But contrary to what I expected, I really like it here. I love the snow and the activities it offers. Tampere also offers a range of cute cafés and thrift stores, which I love. The student community is also strong and supportive.

What kind of student activities have you participated in?

I became a member of the international association of the Tampere city centre campus, ESN FINT and shortly after joined the board. We organize student events and trips in English.

What would you say to someone planning to study and live in Tampere?

Do it! Or at least try it out! Maybe you never imagined moving to Finland of all places for your studies but trust me it is a unique experience I recommend to everyone. Tampere will feel like home very soon.

What is your favourite place in the city to go for fun with friends?

Cafés and secondhand stores!
