Tell us about yourself and your studies

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria. I have lived in Finland for more than a year and it has been very serene for me. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Information Security at Tampere University. I love football (watching and playing), I love travelling – thanks to the Schengen pass that comes with the residence permit ;), and I love reading. My master’s programme has connected me with very good people, it has helped me be more proactive, and I think most importantly, how to communicate effectively with people from other backgrounds. It took time to adjust, but it has been the best decision to come study here. I love the independence of studying here, which enhances self-development.

Did you develop any special skills while studying in Tampere?

With the independence here, it was compulsory to be very organized and know how to manage one's time well. So, I would say I developed better time management, self-motivation – no one will do that for you :), and inter-cultural collaboration.

What tips would you give to new students who are applying to study here?

Tampere University wants you, don't be scared to ask for help when in doubt, reach out to the school (student services, student ambassadors), they will be happy to respond.

How do you get around the city?

To be fair, it wasn't so hard navigating the city initially, thanks to Google maps and Nysse Mobiili. I walk, and cases where it's impossible to walk, I go by bus or tram.

What is your favourite thing about the student culture in Finland?

I love the independence and mutual respect. I also like the fact that students are heard and given the necessary help when required. Like the International Students Mentoring Programme, career fairs, counselling unit, are all designed to help students get acquainted with the life in Finland, and prepare for life after school.

Would you like to share something with us?

I am glad that Tampere University did not only give me admission to my desired programme, but also crowned it with a 100% tuition scholarship.
